This pattern may be used to make a simple day gown with the option to wear it ‘a la polonaise’ or tucked up at the hips. Included are directions for the petticoat and hip pads. In The Pennsylvania Gazette of 1771, “Run away . . . living in Philadelphia . . . a Welsh servant girl . . . she had on, and took with her, when she went away, two calicoe gowns, one dark, the other a purple in diamonds, much worn” as cited in Wives, Slaves and Servant Girls.
