These are simple strong 6″ (15.3 cm) straight pins for holding your hat in place. For example, in London’s The Proceedings of the Old Bailey, of 1777 in a theft case the hearings recorded two men “were indicted, the first for stealing . . .  one hundred and forty-four steel tops for hat pins, value 18 d.”
