Grey is one of the most common colors for stockings estimated at around 20% of those in 18th century New England but common in all the colonies. Natural shades of grey were also used in knitting Monmouth and Dutch caps from the 15th (probably earlier) to early 19th centurys. In Rhode Island in 1772 “a Mulatto Man Servant . . . had on . . . Sheep’s Gray Stockings” cited in Taylor, Runaways, Deserters, and Notorious Villains From Rhode Island Newspapers Volume 1, 2001.
