This beautifully, completely hand sewn & hand quilted petticoat has a blue worsted outside & is lined in mustered yellow linen so it could be reversible. The thin batting is made of linen, as are some originals. The bottom is bound with contrasting claret colored worsted & the top has sturdy white cotton tape to support its 3 pound weight. There’s nothing fancy about the quilting, it’s just completed in 1” diamonds that end about 4 1/2” from the top where the 24 pleats begin.
Women of all economic levels wore quilted petticoats. Often originals are quilted with elaborate florals & animals in lovely silk, but artwork is full of scenes of working class women with simple diamonds. Therefore this is intended as a working class or better common quilted petticoat suitable for a hard working laborer or for needed warmth.
