White is probably the most common color for stockings estimated at 24% of those in Rhode Island runaways from 1760 to 1783 but was common in all the colonies. Specifically in the book Cloth and Costume white made up the greatest percentage of stockings in Cumberland County Pennsylvania from 1750 to 1800 probate records. In Wenches, Wives and Servant Girls an ad in The Pennsylvania Gazette from 1775 included “Run away . . . three Dutch servants; two . . . man and wife . . . had on, when he went away . . . white yarn stockings . . . his wife . . . had on . . . white yarn stockings . . . The other . . . is a Butcher by trade . . . had on, and took with him . . . one pair of white yarn stockings”.
