The pattern is based on an original pair in a private collection. Directions for both plain and fancy mitts are included along with patterns for three sizes, small, medium and large. The construction details as well as the embroidery are based on the original c1750s-70s mitts and are not meant for machine sewing. In The Pennsylvania Packet of 1773 "Ran away . . .  an Irish servant girl . . .  she had on and took with her . . .  a pair of black silk mitts" as cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls.
