Bloom Colour’d Stuff, WWV 639

100% Wool, 61" Wide

Bloom comes in several shades, this shade you may recognize as the modern color magenta. This is a very fine light weight plain weave. Stuff is a very summer weight wool good for women's gowns, jackets, and petticoats, and sometimes used for men's jackets, waistcoats, coats and breeches. In The New York Gazette of 1771, "Run away . . .  a woman . . .  Had on when she went away, either a bloom colour’d poplin, or cotton gown" as cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls. Crimsom quilter's thread is a bit too dark and pink is too light but either are as close a match to this fabric for hand sewing buttonholes as we have. No linen thread really matches, all the red shades being way too red so unbleached 60/2 linen thread is likely the best.
