This circa 1775 buckle was originally found with a bronze ring and silver Sheffield plate. It will accommodate a strap of up to 1 1/8" which is a smaller size (1 1/2" by 2 1/4" overall) good for a woman's shoe or an early 18th century man's shoe. As cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls The Pennsylvania Gazette in 1773, "RUN AWAY from Philadelphia, a Dutch servant woman had on mens shoes, with small carved buckles".
