BCS 126 Pair of Shoe Buckles

Circa 1745, Copied from an original found in the Custis family well in Williamsburg. The buckle (only one was found) may have been the property of Martha Dandridge Custis' (later Washington) father-in-law. It was solid silver and bore wear on one edge from being crossed and rubbed against something by its owner. It will accommodate a strap of up to 1 1/4" which is the size for most men's shoes. The overall dimensions are about 2" by 2 1/2".
