This pattern will allow you to make a silk covered hat and includes 3 sizes and four different styles. The step by step instructions guide you with color photographs and illustrations. All techniques used are based on original 18th century hats from museum collections in both America and England. Hat styles and decorations are directly taken from period portraits and prints. This is a project even a newcomer to hand sewing can easily accomplish. A documentation card is included with each pattern. Many of these silk hats are described in runaway ads for example cited in Wives, Slaves, and Servant Girls a newspaper ad in the 1775 Pennsylvania Gazette included "Run away . . . a native Irish servant girl . . . had on and took with her, a chip hat covered with black silk".
